Perseverance's ground-penetrating radar has confirmed water ice deposits beginning at just 30 centimeters below the Martian surface at two sites in Hellas Planitia โ shallow enough to be accessible with current drilling technology. NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab confirms the finding changes the resource equation for sustained human presence: a crew of four could extract sufficient water for both consumption and electrolysis-based fuel production from a 200-meter drilling site without resupply from Earth.
