Marine biologists operating a remotely piloted submersible off the coast of New Zealand have documented a previously unknown octopus species capable of producing bioluminescent pulses across its entire mantle. The organism, temporarily designated Opisthoteuthis luminara, displays camouflage behavior unlike any cephalopod on record โ shifting light patterns that appear to mimic the visual patterns of rival predators.
