The Australian Institute of Marine Science's annual reef survey reports coral coverage increases of up to 30% in monitored sections of the northern and central Great Barrier Reef — a genuine recovery signal driven largely by a favorable La Niña cooling cycle in 2023-2024. But AIMS researchers are explicit that the gains are fragile: a single severe bleaching event, of the kind predicted with increasing frequency as the Pacific warms, could erase a decade of regrowth within weeks.
